Work Dog's Interview N.115 Year 2002 by Mario Vittone
Mauro Favero (left), owner of "Rio Bianco" kennel and Massimo Santini (right), owner of "Diamante Nero" kennel
DIAMANTE NERO and RIO BIANCO is a binomial, that constituted itself in the last ten years. Thay are really an important new development in the panorama of Dobermann breeding. We've faced this two breeders together for an interview in attempt to understand the key of their success.
Why and when did your collaboration start?
Mauro Favero: I saw Massimo (remark: Massimo Santini, owner of "Diamante Nero kennel) for the first time on the social championship in 1982 in Rome. He was with one black female, Amparo del Diamante Nero (Flint dell'Orchidea Nera x Astrid del Diamante Nero). I was not certain why this female and this young breeder attracted me, but the head of this female: parallel, expressive, dark-eyed left a strong impression on me. When I wondered about genetic origin one answer came to my mind - "Furstenfeld". In that moment my passion for this bloodline, which certainly was one of the basis in dobermann breeding, was born. Some years after, when I wanted to couple one of my females, of optimal genetic origin but perhaps without the expression I was sure Furstenfeld lines had, I remembered the young breeder from Tuscany and the enthusiasm when he was describing me his breeding concept. He always regarded highly, in an absolute way, the type expression of the race. By that time Massimo has already started to develop his breeding by his concept and was in my opinion, the only concrete alternative to the already famous breeders of that period. Sure the black male Aysel del Diamante Nero (Arcas v Faunburg x Elsa dei Ferbas) was on optimal starting point for our collaboration that still lasts.
Massimo Santini: I remember meeting Mauro Favero, the owner of the Rio Bianco kennel, in the beginning of 80s. In 1986 his female Dana (Aron di Villa Conte x Dasy di Villa Conte) came to mate with one of my first dobermanns, Aysel del Diamante Nero (Arcas v Faunburg x Elsa of Ferbas). That was the first time that a breeder brought a bitch to mate with a male from my breeding. I remember asking Mauro why was that his choice, as my kennel was not a lot known in that period. I was very proud because we were a lot alike. This was an extremly considerate breeder, that has used well his opportunity, following determined bloodlines. he has already shaped his idea of dobermann: care to the attitude and the general construction of the dog, with relationship between head-log, the corrected position of the rump and the angles, the importance of head expression, the importance of parallelism, of just stop of the nasal cane, of the dark eyes. These were the unavoidable principles on which Mauro based his selection. From there, the maximum attention and thoughful searches through Furstenfeld lines, well-know based on the expression of the head were engaged.
How and when did your collaboration continue?
Mauro Favero: From this initial contact our colaborations continued. We've worked with will and attitude, to improve the breed. There were lot of personal and telephone contacts between us on the Padova-Florence/Florence-Padova route. As time passed our families and friends were unavoidably involved. Long arguments, graphical and theoretical experiments of pedigree were the main topic of these encounters that sometimes prolonged late in the night, leaving us tired but satisfied with the conclusions. While Massimo had already created his outline of breeding, working on subjects like Yura-Nymphemburg, my ideas were still vague. Taking advantage of the friendship that I had with Mr. Silvano Ravera, I contacted Belgian kennel "van Roveline" that had lot of success in European rings with dogs that were very near my ideal of dobermann. So I acquired from Roland a black female, Kim van Roveline (Falco v d Isberg x Deppi v Cesarberg). I mated her with Sendo del Diamante Nero (Bully del Diamante Nero x Senda del Diamante Nero) and this was the first combination with Yura-Nymphemburg. The result of this connection Yura-Nymphemburg-Roveline was one step ahead towards our ideal type. Certainly the best result of these experiments was mating of another female that I've imported from Belgium, CH. Hera van Roveline (Hertog Alpha v. le Dobry x Farah v. de Guskensoheve) with the black male ZTP 1A ECC SCH I Ziork del Diamante Nero (Bodo del Diamante Nero x Dana del Diamante Nero), which had a very emphased definition of Yura-Nymphemburg type. This was the first litter that came to our ideal of Dobermann. From this litter a black male VIZE.IDC.JG.SG. Ulisse del Diamante Nero and a black female Uriel del Rio Bianco singled out. Uriel will in successive matings be the determining reason for me to continue with this setup.
Massimo Santini: From our first encounter, we began working closely together developing our vision as well as our friendship. We were cordially engaged in dog search, in the true sense of the word through may sleepless nights when arguments pulled to the infinite. Padova-Florence route had become a familiar way. In brief we were constructing, perhaps without our knowing this solid base for our future as breeders. However after a series of other genetic experiments based on intuition and instinct of wanting to pursue distinctive type in breeding, it was the end of 1986, when Mauro made a decision about what had to be the true genetic base of his breeding. I remember Mauro often spoke about a Belgian breeder with whom he had contact, and who in that period was emerging to international level. Mr Roland Beunekens sold him a female, Kim v. Roveline (Falco v d Isberg x Deppi v Cesarberg) and he coupled her with Sendo of Diamante Nero (Bully del Diamante Nero x Dana del Diamante Nero) and he was convinced that this very connection should be continued based on genetic combination Yura-Nymphemburg-Roveline. In 1989 when Mauro coupled the black female Hera v Roveline (Hertog Alpha v. le Dobry x Fara v. de Guskensoheve), a female of optimal substance with a beautiful head, he got in fact, the true prototype of the Rio Bianco kennel. He mated her with a black male ZTP 1A ECC SCHI Ziork del Diamante Nero ( Bodo del Diamante Nero x Dana del Diamante Nero) and so was born a black male VIZE.IDC.JG.SG. Ulisse of Rio Bianco, a dog of great substance with a beautiful head that gave Maura a chance to compete on International shows. Ulisse del Rio Bianco mated in 1993 with the black female Elsa (Zeus del Diamante Nero x Mijanou del Diamante Nero). And so Vera del Diamante Nero, a brown female of optimal substance with a beautiful head and a dark brown coat was born, which will present herself as an important factor in my future breeding.
What were the most important moves in your collaboration?
Mauro Favero: One of the most important, but not fundamental, move was the mating, parallel to the one when Massimo mated Rita del Rio Bianco and Feldo del Diamante Nero, of Raisa del Rio Bianco and Feldo del Diamante Nero. So was my "H" litter born: Hera, Hiro, Helga, Hemy, Hertog etc., typical square dogs of medium substance. On a show where Mr. Wiblishauer judged, Hiro with 12 months achieved the 1°Ecc. The search for ideal continues and the result of tight cousanguinity mating, brother/sister - Helga and Heros del Rio Bianco, was only one puppy - Miki del Rio Bianco, a black male that became Jugend Sieger in Bayern at thirteen months. He was a medium-sized dog, square, with an optimal rump, masculine, long and parallel head with dark eyes. Miki did not leave any sign as he died young.
Massimo Santini: I think a fundamental move for my breeding was the one I made in 1993 when I've mated black female AIAD JG SIGERIN Rita del Rio Bianco (Quarz del Littorio x Hera v Roveline) and the black male CH RIP ZTP SCH I Feldo del Diamante Nero (Bodo del Diamante Nero x Senda del Diamante Nero). That was when black male INT CH, WELT JG SG, ZTP 1A, SCH II Uno del Diamante Nero was born. He was a structured male of medium ransom with optimal character that will give important genetic contribution to my breeding. I remember a litlle ancdote: when Uno got the title of Young World Champion in Bern In 1994 I telephoned Mauro to Romaand told him the news. I remember Mauro's replay: "...Ah... that's great... ...wait a moment.....we'll speak tomorrow...", and he hung up on me. I could imagine him walking in circles around his room in disbelief. It took a few days before he was convinced that this was true. Many daughters of Uno are even nowadays among important females of my breeding like IT CH, ZTP 1A, ECC.SCH.I Una del Diamante Nero (Uno del Diamante Nero x Vera del Diamante Nero), a female that has inherited from her father a perfect overage cuts with an optional expression of race. It's interesting to notice that the mother of Uno was daughter of Ulisse del Rio Bianco. Una has been very successful on important European shows:.1A in class on Bundessieger and Europe Sieger. One other black female daughter that gave a great satisfation to me, has been ZTP1A .ECC (Vogel) SCH I Giuliana del Diamante Nero (Uno del Diamante Nero x Senda del Diamante Nero). The satisfation was in the fact that Otmar Vogel rewarded her with ZTP 1A ECC, whom I consider even today one of the greatest masters of the race. Many other daughters of Uno passed with maximum qualification the ZTP test, among which I'd like to mention ZTP1A ECC, SCH I Era del Diamante Nero and Efa del Diamante Nero (Uno del Diamante Nero x Akira), two females always on top of important International shows. Era unfortunately passed away a very young dog due to poisoning. Among still living Uno's daughters I'd like to mention ZTP ECC, SCH1 Opera del Diamante Nero (Uno del Diamante Nero x Erienne) and ZTP 1B Prugna del Diamante Nero (Uno del Diamante Nero x Elsa), a compact dog of optimal substance that has already given good sons. Finally I would mention Uno's last daughter, a black female owned by countess Ethel Luchovch ZTP 1A (Wiblishauser the best ZTP) SCH I Nala del Diamante Nero. She had distinguished herself on important European shows. In brief, Uno can be considered a reproductive determinant in the genetic evolution of my breeding that has left its prints throughout his bloodline that derived from Yura-Nymphemburg-Roveline combination.
But didn't you risk closing your bloodlines too much with that breeding logic?
Mauro Favero: Sure, had I only concentrated on these two bloodlines, the genetic closing could have yield to breeding problems. In fact, while Massimo pursued some of his ideas, I coupled other females with different bloodlines, creating other breeding bases to work on subsequently, considering, besides aesthetic side, also the character of the race. In that period I've coupled a black female that I had imported from Belgium - Laila van Roveline (Baron Bryan v Harro's Berg x Jenna v Roveline), famous sister of Lucifer and Lama, with a brown male INT.CH. Baquero von Plfaffenberg (Bronco v Zenn x Goldi v Kirschbhul). Like most of experiments, neither this connection had greater significance. But the successive mating gave an optimal base to work on. It was when I coupled Laila with a black male INT.CH. Ali von Langenhorst (Guy's Hilo v Norden Stam x Biene v Niederkassel), from which brown female Sophie del Rio Bianco and brown male AIAD.JG, SG, EUROPE JG SG Sting del Rio Bianco were born. Another connection that will create an optimal breeding base was between the black female Rinett del Rio Bianco (Quarz del Littorio x Hera v Roveline) and black male INT.CH.IT.CH. Rheza von Franckenhorst. These genetic bases will carry virtues not indifferent to the future consanguinity operated between the lines Yura-Nymphemburg-Roveline, bringing quality that we find today in the dogs that have been born in the last breeding phase (Nitro, Ursula, Tonio, Una del Diamante Nero, etc.)
Massimo Santini: That is surely a good observation, but only valid to the situation when it deals with the genetic evolution only. But In fact, since Mauro and me parallelly pursued the other genetic distances that in our future breading brought the new virtues. Had our breeding only based on single genetic basis it certainly wouldn't be an evolution. Indeed if the so-called renewal of blood haven't took place, sure our dogs today would have negatives effects due to excessive consanguinity. With careful analysis, for example, of pedigrees of the dogs like AIAD.SG, IT.CH Nitro del Rio Bianco and AIAD.CH, IT.CH. Moro del Diamante Nero, the two contemporaries, emerges a new genetic contribution from other bloodlines. In short, I'm very open for working with consanguinity but with attention for acquisition of new genetic virtues that have a twin features: to improve the morphological and character aspect but that also have collateral effect to increase the blood base, which is very positive from dog's health point of view. I repeat, this is a concept so important that, it in my opinion, has a priority in livestock breeding in general.
In your long lasting relationship, have there been moments of crisis between you?
Mauro Favero: Maybe not crisis, but moments of tension or incomprehension. But that's natural between persons with various habits and cultures, even if they are just a hundred kilometers distant. It's also normal to want to resolve these conflicts, leaning on our friendship and respect for one another. What we always had in common is getting involved in productive discourse that certainly can dissolve tensions. We've always exchanges opinions and that led us to continue our collaboration. We were characters opposite to one another: I was from Veneto and Massimo from Tuscany, but as the saying goes: as time goes by the sheep with the wolf learns to howl. And so did we...I removed the claws and Massimo has become more reasonable. So our different characters holds us together giving us the edge that not many partners have.
Massimo Santini: Look, like in all the human relationships it's natural that there have been moments of ups and downs but I also must say that we overcame these moments of crisis between us very effectively and that's why our friendship remains solid after all these years. We had a great understanding for the mating tips we gave each other. I can say that after consulting Mauro I have often changed my initial idea about which dogs to mate. I believe that this is a very important thing for a good collaboration. Objectivity is very important in the breeding as it is in every day life. I would also want to emphasize that when we met long time ago we were very opposed to each other, regarding character. Mauro was a Veneto classic... how should I put this...he was always accommodating... And I was from Tuscany...always agitating, never accommodating. But as time passed...when we spoke the last time we had a good look on ourselves we were under impression that the roles have slightly inverted. However I believe that very diversity of our characters kept us united.
Which do you think has been the most important mating in your breeding?
Mauro Favero: I think that the most important mating that Massimo made is when he coupled a black female Julia v. Nymphemburg and Gildo v. Jura, connection in tight consanguinity between father and daughter, connection that Massimo made pushed from strong convictions of "Furstenfeld". But perhaps without the certainty in this connection that gave birth to Bodo del Diamante Nero and Bull del Diamante Nero, which marked the beginning of a new genetic current. Without these two males, today we wouldn't be able to speak about: Nero, Indio, Idina, India, Moro del Diamante Nero and not even about Nilo, Napoleone, Zeni and Nitro del Rio Bianco.
Nero del Diamante Nero
Tonio del Diamante Nero
Massimo Santini: I believe that connection that Mauro carried inn 1994 and that brought a new genetic contribution in his selection. I'm refering to mating of black female Athena del Rio Bianco (Sting del Rio Bianco x Hera v Roveline) with a black male CH.RIP.ZTP, SCH I Nero del Diamante Nero (Feldo del Diamante Nero x Quirin del Diamante Nero). This mating will give life to two black males IT.CH UDC.CH ZTP SCH I Napoleone del Diamante Nero and IT.CH, ZTP 1A ECC, SCH I Nilo del Rio Bianco. These two males will be crucial for genetic evolution of Rio Bianco, in a way that Napoleone will be a father of a black female AIAD CH, IT CH, DV JG SIGERIN, ZTP 1A ECC Zeni del Rio Bianco, a female of optimal substance with a good character that was coupled with Nilo - a connection in medium consanguinity uncle-grandson that will produce the black male AIAD JG SG, EUROPE JG SG, BUND JG SG, SCH I ZTP 1A ECC (Vogel) Rui Manuel del Rio Bianco, a dog of medium ransom with a good head, sold young in Greece. Also it must not be forgotten that Nilo is a father of the black male AIAD SG, IT CH .MULTI JG CH ZTP 1A ECCSCH I Nitro del Rio Bianco.
Napoleone del Diamante Nero
Nilo del Rio Bianco
What are the characteristics of your friendship?
Mauro Favero: Sure one of the characteristics that we shared all the way was our passion for a certain type of dobermann. Based on the expression found in Furstenfeld, with modern body as long as have dogs coming from the Roveline lines. But above all we share the same breeding passion. And certainly our relationship that has always based on frankness and respect.
Massimo Santini: I must say that in the base of this relationship I find above all the mutual respect. Also Mauro's character... he used to react harshly to many things he disagreed with, but this has never turn to desister and did not stop us to pursue our ideal of dobermann. Even in truly difficult moments when I was thinking to give up and hang the leash on the nail, it was Mauro who convinced me to go on.
Zeni del Rio Bianco
Do you think your collaboration will continue in the future?
Mauro Favero: Sure! Even with difficulties and despite the new troubles that are already on the horizon. Now that we've reached a level that allows us to compete with success also in the ring outside Italy, we have received letters from several European Governaments regarding the limits (cut of ears and tail) that certainly are not favorable for evolution of the race, not even in our country. We will put up a greatest effort possible in order to work in the best possible way, with the same sport spirit as until today, giving ourselves the name "Premium company of Rio Bianco & Diamante Nero”.
Rui Manuel del Rio Bianco
Massimo Santini: Since it's much too early I rather not mention the names of the dogs that we'll mate soon., of which most have been born from this genetic combination, but I'd want, as an example, to mention the black female ZTP 1A ECC SCH I Pamela del Rio Bianco (Moro del Diamante Nero x Amparo del Rio Bianco) who unfortunately passes way a few mounths ago, a female who has already distinguished herself at a young international level winning the female class as Europe Sieger. Also she was second in youth class at AIAD Championship. It was a female with relly beautiful head and I think she was also one of important points of our collaboration. However, despite the current political situation that affects dobermann race, I;m sure that a "Diamante Nero" will always be found in a "Rio Bianco".
